For Research: "Hortensia's Protest"

" In the century BCE, what rights did a feeeborn Roman woman enjoy? What was her role and status in society?"
Freedpeople were slaves who were manumitted and Freeborns were the children of freedpeople.
Freeborn children, became full citizens  and could even become equestrians if rich enough. Freedpeople had low social status, and most were probably fairly poor, but it was possible for them to achieve some success in a trade, and a few might even become wealthy.
In Roman law, women were under the complete control of their husbands, the head of the household. Roman woman had very limited rights. They could own land, and there are many instances where a Roman women became quite rich, because of inheritance. The role of a woman was to manage the house hold, tend to the children, and be submissive to their husbands. Status in Roman society was sought through public display of wealth. if you werent in the higest ranking of the social class, having wealth, you really had no say.
